Carefree Truth

Issue #44, March 19, 2010

The first non print edition of the Sonoran News published a front page photograph of Don Sorchych with Bob Coady and Ryan Ducharme, taken during a ceremony at which Mr. Ducharme presented Mr. Sorchych with a Patriot Award from The Republican Professionals.  According to their website, Ryan Ducharme is the "National President & Co-Founder of The Republican Professionals".  As the votes were being counted, this award was presented to Don Sorchych by the man who was hired to run the recall attempt on Mayor Schwan, which the Sonoran News enthusiastically supported.  Bob Coady's intimate involvement and support is clearly demonstrated in the photo.  For those who had previously questioned the validity of the Coady/Ducharme/Sonoran News connection, this should remove all doubt.

In the last weekly print edition of the Sonoran News, Don Sorchych wrote, "So here we are only six days away from the recall election.  Based on past results... I would project John Traynor has already won, since over 1000 votes have been cast."  As we are all now aware, this statement could not have been more wrong.  In an election with the highest voter turnout, 57%, David Schwan garnered 878 votes, the highest number of votes ever received by a candidate in a Carefree election.  The past influence of the Sonoran News over Carefree voters has clearly declined dramatically.

When the official results were announced, Arthur Gimson wrote:

I doubt that we will see any analysis of the election result, which sent clear signals that Carefree voters:

1. Did not like the recall effort

2. Did like David Schwan

3. Did not want to see Coady, Koteas, Stavoe and Traynor as the majority.

And nothing that the Sonoran News could write would change their minds.

Arthur Gimson

The only references in the current Sonoran News occur in Don Sorchych's My View column, in John Traynor's letter to the editor, and in the ever vicious anonymous Your View letters, all of which were laden with excuses and accusations.  I will address these in a future issue.

Consistent attacks over the years on adults over whom Don Sorchych exercised no control were bad enough.  But when he extended that behavior to high school freshman A.J. Davis, who had the courage to organize protests asking for  unbiased reporting about the schools, rather than the constant negative  rants which still continue in the Sonoran News, he crossed the line.  Week after week, he vilified this brave young girl who dared to disagree with him.  If the rest of his venom was accepted as at least partially factual, these attacks on Miss Davis clearly painted a picture of Mr. Sorchych that was not pleasant.  This was not lost on the readership, many of whom were justifiably horrified.  These actions  further impacted his increasingly shaky credibility.

When any organization hits a certain level of moral decay, decline is inevitable.  The increasingly vast number of Sonoran News papers in the trash cans of both the Carefree and Cave Creek Post Offices demonstrate that more and more  people recognize this and are acting accordingly.  Attempting to explain his floundering publication's problems Mr. Sorchych wrote, "We have struggled with the effects of the economy and the apparent lack of business/consumer confidence has eroded our rate of advertisements."  I believe that "the apparent lack of business/consumer confidence" applies to the Sonoran News far more than it does to the economy, as I notice an abundance of ads in other local papers.
